The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) proudly recognised 33 outstanding students during the 2026 Academic High Achievers Awards Night Ceremony held this evening, Thursday, 23 April 2026 at the School of Tourism and Hospitality Management.
The event brought together the University community, along with families and invited guests, to celebrate academic excellence across the Universityβs faculties and programmes.Speaking at the ceremony, Acting Vice-Chancellor, Associate Professor Eric Katovai, described the occasion as βa celebration of excellenceβ and a moment to reflect on the dedication behind studentsβ success.
βWhat we celebrate this evening is more than academic performance. It is evidence of perseverance, you have shown focus, consistency, and determination, and for that, you deserve this recognition,β he said.
Associate Professor Katovai emphasised SINUβs role as a national institution, noting that the achievements of students contribute directly to the countryβs development.
βYou are not only high achievers within your faculties, you are emerging contributors to the future of this nation. In a small island country like ours, excellence carries even greater significance.β
He also acknowledged the important role played by families and staff in supporting student success.
βBehind every successful student is a story of support, sacrifice, encouragement, and beliefβ¦ The success we see this evening is also a reflection of your dedication,β he added.
The awards recognised top-performing students from:
- Faculty of Nursing, Medicine & Health Sciences
- Faculty of Education & Humanities
- Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries & Forestry
- Faculty of Business & Tourism Studies
- SINU Technical and Further Education (TAFE)
Many students achieved Distinction and High Distinction results, reflecting a strong culture of academic excellence at SINU.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Vice-Chancellorβs Award to Desma Mapita, awarded for achieving the highest academic performance in the Postgraduate Diploma in Educational Leadership & Change.
In closing, Associate Professor Katovai encouraged students to view the recognition as a stepping stone rather than a final destination.
βRecognition is not the end of the journey, it is a marker along the way, carry your success with humility. Use your knowledge with purpose, and remain committed to contributing meaningfully to society.β
The ceremony concluded with entertainment and a celebration of the studentsβ achievements, marking an important milestone in their academic journeys.
