The Vice Chancellor of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU), Professor Transform Aqorau, delivered a keynote address at the 40th Anniversary Celebration of Wuyi University in Jiangmen City, Guangdong Province, China.

Joining the Vice Chancellor at this important event were Pro-Chancellor & Council Chair Dr. Morgan Wairiu, Ms. Michelle Lam from the Prime Ministerโ€™s Office, and Mr. Yang of JQY Enterprise. The SINU delegation was warmly received as honoured representatives among Wuyi Universityโ€™s international partner institutions.

In his address, Professor Aqorau congratulated Wuyi University on four decades of achievements and reaffirmed the deepening partnership between the two universities. He highlighted the rapid growth and excellence of Wuyi University and reflected on the shared values that underpin the collaboration between the two institutions.

Drawing from his speech, Professor Aqorau noted that although forty years may be brief in history, Wuyi University has โ€œblossomed into an institution of excellence, widely admired and respected.โ€ He emphasised the importance of the partnership between SINU and Wuyi Universityโ€”formalised earlier this year through a transformative Memorandum of Understandingโ€”which represents a shared commitment to tackling global challenges together .

He acknowledged the significance of the newly established Joint Research Center for Disaster Risk Reduction, describing it as โ€œa beacon of hope, demonstrating what is possible when nations collaborate across continents.โ€ The Vice Chancellor spoke passionately about how this partnership supports Solomon Islands in addressing climate change, strengthening early-warning systems, developing cyclone-resilient infrastructure, and promoting sustainable energy solutions.

Importantly, he celebrated the presence of 18 Solomon Islands students currently studying at Wuyi University, calling them โ€œyoung torchbearers of knowledgeโ€ who will one day return home equipped to build safer homes, expand renewable energy, and uplift communities across the country.

Professor Aqorau also reflected on the broader friendship between the Solomon Islands and the Peopleโ€™s Republic of China, expressing appreciation for Chinaโ€™s growing partnership across various sectors, including education.

The SINU delegation also presented a gift on behalf of the University and engaged with Wuyi University leaders and staff during the celebration events.

SINU congratulates Wuyi University on this remarkable milestone and looks forward to a future of strengthened cooperation, shared research, and expanded opportunities for students and staff.

โ€“ May our cooperation and friendship continue to flourish.
