The Solomon Islands National University Taekwondo Club (SINU-TC) made an impressive debut by collecting a total of 12 medals in its first-ever tournament appearance.
SINU-TC claimed one gold medal in the under-70kg female senior category, one silver medal in the under-59kg male junior category, and ten bronze medals, bringing the total medal count to twelve.
The two-day tournament, sanctioned by the Solomon Islands Taekwondo Federation (SITF), was hosted by Focus Taekwondo Club at Hong Sun School in Honiara on Wednesday 18 June 2025 and Thursday 19 June 2025. The event concluded successfully on Friday 20 June 2025 with a medal presentation ceremony.
Six Taekwondo clubs based in Honiara participated in the tournament. SINU-TC fielded 12 fighters: four in the junior category and eight in the senior category, including three female and nine male athletes.
According to SINU-TC Head Coach Wilson Saeni, the team performed beyond expectations, especially considering that most of the fighters were competing at this level for the first time.
โThis tournament was a tough one, as nearly every weight category featured national-level fighters,โ said Mr. Saeni. โDespite that, our athletes showed courage and determination, and Iโm proud of how they stood up to the challenge.โ
Coach Saeni also expressed optimism about the clubโs future prospects, noting that the experience gained will prove valuable as SINU-TC prepares for its second tournament scheduled for October this year.
โI would like to thank the fighters for their bravery and fearless attitude shown during the competition,โ he added. โSpecial thanks also go to my assistant instructor and coach, Joel Sale, for his tireless effort in preparing the team.โ
Mr. Saeni also acknowledged the support from SINU, saying, โWe are grateful to the university for the financial assistance that enabled us to participate in this tournament.โ
While other clubs fielded national fighters, SINU-TC stood out as the only team comprised entirely of non-national competitors, making its medal tally all the more commendable.
