The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) has officially launched its Green & Clean Campus Campaign, aligning the initiative with World Clean-up Day on Friday 19 September 2025.
Speaking at the launch, Vice Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau emphasized that the campaign goes beyond just cleaning the environment, it reflects SINUโs values of character, respect, responsibility, and pride in place.
โToday we not only join millions around the globe in a day of environmental action, but we also launch our very own SINU Green & Clean Campus Campaign. This campaign is a statement of our values and our leadership in sustainability and civic responsibility,โ Professor Aqorau said.
The Vice Chancellor further announced a forthcoming partnership with the Honiara City Council (HCC), through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to strengthen campus waste management, foster public health, and empower communities to become agents of environmental change.
SINU also acknowledged its partners, including global shipping and logistics company CMA CGM, whose presence and support were highlighted at the event.
CMA CGM General Manager Myat Thu Han congratulated SINU on the milestone, stressing that the campaign represents more than a clean-up:
โThis event is about awareness, action, and partnership. CMA CGM is honored to support SINU and its community in taking meaningful steps toward safeguarding our environment.โ
As part of its commitment, CMA CGM donated garbage bags and bins to support the initiative.
The SINU Green & Clean Campus Campaign will be guided by six pillars in the months ahead:
- Values-First Culture โ Fostering respect, responsibility, and pride in campus environments.
- Teach It, Model It, Live It โ Embedding sustainability and waste-consciousness across curricula and daily practices.
- Systems and Habits โ Improving waste management infrastructure and introducing weekly Wednesday clean-ups.
- Student Leadership & Friendly Competition โ Encouraging student-driven initiatives and inter-campus competitions for cleanliness.
- Partnership with HCC โ Recycling & Beyond โ Enhancing recycling streams, outreach, and integrated waste systems in collaboration with the city.
- Tracking Progress & โKeep SINU Cleanโ Pledge โ Monthly dashboards and a pledge system to sustain accountability and momentum.
The launch concluded with a one-hour clean-up across SINUโs three campuses โ Kukum, Panatina, and Ranadi โ symbolizing the first united action under the new campaign.
With strong leadership, committed students, and supportive partners, SINU aims to become a beacon of sustainability and environmental stewardship in the Solomon Islands.
