Press Release

4 June 2026

The proposed Solomon Islands National University (SINU) Makira Campus has reached a major milestone following the allocation of 40 hectares of land by the Makira-Ulawa Provincial Government (MUPG) this morning.

A strong MUPG delegation, led by Premier Hon. Stanley Siapu and accompanied by the Minister for Education and Human Resources Development, Hon.Toreiramo, and Provincial Secretary Christopher Waiwori, met with SINU Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate, Dr. William Parairato, at the Kukum Campus to formalize the historic agreement. The allocation paves the way for the establishment of the SINU Makira Campus at Waimamura.

Speaking during the brief meeting, Premier Siapu said his government had allocated 40 hectares of land at Waimamura for the development of the SINU Makira Campus.

He said the land allocation is a strategic initiative aimed at improving access to tertiary education and promoting human resource development in Makira-Ulawa Province and the eastern region of the country.

The Premier described the move as a strategic investment that aligns with the MUPG’s education priorities and long-term socio-economic development aspirations under its PACRA policy framework.

Responding to the offer, SINU Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate Dr. William Parairato welcomed and thanked Premier Siapu and his government for their bold commitment to supporting SINU’s expansion into Makira-Ulawa Province.

Dr. Parairato assured the delegation that a survey team would soon be dispatched to conduct a site survey at the proposed location later this month.

He further stated that SINU has been consulting with several provinces across the country as part of its vision to expand its presence nationwide. He noted that Makira-Ulawa Province has taken the lead by allocating 40 hectares of land for the establishment of the SINU Makira Campus.
