The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) celebrated the achievements of 742 graduands at its second 2026 Graduation Ceremony held on Thursday, 1 October 2026, under the theme “Shaping the Future: Knowledge, Technology and Nation Building.”

The graduating class comprises 471 female and 271 male graduands, representing approximately 63 per cent and 37 per cent respectively.

The ceremony brought together graduands, families and friends, SINU Council and Senate members, government representatives, senior officials, private sector representatives, education authorities and members of the wider community to celebrate this significant milestone.
The Faculty of Education and Humanities recorded the largest graduating group, with 329 graduands, followed by the Faculty of Business and Tourism Studies with 160, the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Studies with 105, the Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry with 57, and the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology with 48 graduands.

The University also celebrated 24 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduands and 19 graduands through Distance and Flexible Learning, highlighting the importance of diverse pathways to higher education and skills development.

Delivering the Vice Chancellor’s Graduation Address, the Vice Chancellor highlighted the important role graduates will play in shaping Solomon Islands’ future through knowledge, innovation, technology and service. The address emphasised that a qualification represents not an endpoint, but a foundation for continued learning as graduates enter a changing world where technology, artificial intelligence and new forms of work are transforming professional and community life.

Graduates were encouraged to use technology responsibly, understand its limitations, protect privacy and ensure that technological solutions remain accessible and relevant to Solomon Islands communities.
The Vice Chancellor also highlighted the importance of bringing together formal education, scientific knowledge and the knowledge held within communities, including language, customary practices, oral histories and observations of the local environment.

The graduation address emphasised that nation building takes place through everyday acts of professional competence, integrity and service.
Graduates were encouraged to contribute to their communities whether as teachers, health professionals, business owners, engineers, public servants, researchers, technicians or in other fields.
The address also highlighted the importance of ensuring that opportunities in education, health, connectivity, livelihoods and other areas extend beyond Honiara and reach communities across Solomon Islands.

SINU’s role in this national development effort was also emphasised, particularly through education and training, research, innovation, partnerships and the development of graduates equipped to contribute to the country’s needs.

As the graduates prepare to enter the next stage of their lives and careers, they were given three key invitations:

Stay curious. Graduates were encouraged to continue learning, engage with people from different disciplines and remain open to new ideas.

Be brave enough to begin. Graduates were encouraged to turn ideas into practical action, measure their impact, learn from challenges and continue improving.

Remember whom your work is for. Graduates were reminded to remain connected to their families and communities, share their knowledge, mentor others and use their skills and opportunities to widen opportunities for others.

The University also acknowledged the families and friends whose support contributed to the graduates reaching this milestone, as well as SINU staff whose work throughout the academic year helped prepare students for graduation.

As the 742 graduands begin the next chapter of their journeys, SINU congratulates each graduate and wishes them continued success as they apply their knowledge, skills and ideas in their communities, workplaces and across Solomon Islands.
