29 September 2026
Solomon Islands National University (SINU) staff recently participated in the Seminar on Capacity Building for Diplomats from Solomon Islands, held in Beijing and Shandong Province, China, from 3 to 23 September 2026.
The three-week seminar was organised by China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) under the auspices of the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China. The programme brought together participants for a combination of lectures, professional skills sessions, field visits, cultural activities and Chinese language learning.
The seminar covered key areas including diplomacy, diplomatic protocol, negotiation, conflict resolution, professional writing and communication, governance, economic development, foreign policy and international engagement.
The programme also provided opportunities for engagement with representatives from various Solomon Islands Government ministries and agencies, allowing participants to exchange perspectives on diplomacy, governance, development and international cooperation.
The field visits in Beijing and Shandong Province complemented the academic sessions by providing practical exposure to China’s development, infrastructure, innovation, culture and heritage.
Participants also visited some of China’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks, including the Great Wall of China and the Forbidden City in Beijing.
The visits provided a deeper appreciation of China’s rich history and cultural heritage, while also offering an opportunity to observe the country’s development and the importance placed on infrastructure, education, innovation, preservation and long-term planning.
The programme provided valuable lessons and experiences that can contribute to professional development and knowledge-sharing within SINU. The exposure to different approaches to education, development and international engagement also provided perspectives that may support future institutional initiatives and professional practice.
The seminar provided an important opportunity for professional development, networking and cross-cultural learning. Participants are expected to share their experiences and key lessons from the programme with colleagues at SINU, supporting wider knowledge-sharing within the University.
The experience also contributed to strengthening people-to-people and professional connections between Solomon Islands and China and provided a broader understanding of China’s development experience and international engagement.
SINU acknowledges the opportunity to participate in the seminar and appreciates the support provided by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and China Foreign Affairs University.
