The Council of the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) held its second meeting for 2026 on Tuesday, 8 September 2026, and considered a range of matters relating to the University’s strategic direction, academic development, infrastructure, institutional governance, financial accountability and operational priorities.
The meeting provided Council with an opportunity to receive progress reports, consider recommendations and provide direction on a number of important initiatives being undertaken by the University.
Strategic and Institutional Development
Council considered the SINU Cascaded Corporate Plan 2026–2030 and the SINU Academic Plan 2026–2030, which provide important frameworks for the University’s strategic, academic and operational development over the coming years.
Council also considered a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening the University’s academic structures and governance arrangements, including proposals relating to the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology [FSET].
Academic Quality and Student Learning
Council considered several new institutional policies relating to grading and results, qualifications issuance, assessment and examinations, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in teaching and learning.
Council also considered the establishment of a Centre for Teaching and Learning, which is intended to support continuous improvement in teaching quality, learning outcomes and professional development across the University.
These initiatives form part of SINU’s ongoing commitment to maintaining high academic standards and strengthening the quality of education and student experience.
Campus and Infrastructure Development
Council received updates on a number of significant campus development and infrastructure projects across the University.
These included matters relating to the University’s land and campus planning, the refurbishment of facilities at the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Sciences, and the rehabilitation and preparation for the official handover of the Poitete Campus.
Council’s consideration of these matters is aimed at supporting the University’s long-term infrastructure needs and ensuring that its campuses and facilities are appropriately planned, developed and managed in accordance with relevant requirements.
Digital Transformation
Council received a progress update on the SINU Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Project, which forms part of the University’s broader programme of digital transformation.
The project is intended to improve the integration and efficiency of key University administrative and management systems and strengthen institutional processes and information management.
Partnerships and Institutional Collaboration
Council considered the University’s Memoranda of Understanding and institutional agreements for 2026, recognising the important role that strategic partnerships play in supporting academic development, institutional strengthening, training, research and other areas of collaboration.
Council also considered the proposed Terms of Reference for the Public-Private Partnership Technical Committee, which will support the University’s consideration of potential partnership opportunities in accordance with appropriate governance arrangements.
Financial Accountability and Risk Management
Council received a progress update on the financial audit of SINU for the years 2021–2024 and considered the SINU Annual Report 2025 as part of its continuing oversight of the University’s performance and accountability.
Council also received reports relating to internal audit, risk management and institutional processes, including matters considered through the University’s Audit and Risk Committee.
These processes form part of SINU’s ongoing commitment to strengthening accountability, internal controls, risk management and good institutional governance.
Legal and Governance Matters
Council received an update on ongoing legal and court matters involving the University and considered these matters through the University’s established governance and reporting processes.
Council will continue to monitor significant legal, operational and institutional matters through the appropriate committees and governance mechanisms.
Council’s Continuing Focus
The Council reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that SINU continues to strengthen its academic quality, institutional governance, financial accountability, infrastructure, digital systems and strategic partnerships.
Council emphasised the importance of ensuring that major University initiatives are progressed in a responsible, transparent and properly governed manner, with appropriate consideration of legal, financial, academic, operational and community interests.
The matters considered at the meeting form part of SINU’s continuing programme of institutional development and its commitment to providing quality higher and technical education and contributing to the social and economic development of Solomon Islands.
Council will continue to oversee the implementation of its decisions and receive progress updates through the University’s established governance structures.
