PRESS RELEASE
2 June 2026
Solomon Islands National University (SINU) was pleased to welcome representatives from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), including Associate Professor Francis Bobongie-Harris and the First Nations Delegation Team, during a meeting held at the Kukum Lecture Theatre (KLT) Boardroom on Monday, 1 June 2026.
Speaking on behalf of the Faculty of Education and Humanities, Dr Patricia Rodie, Dean of the Faculty of Education and Humanities, emphasised the importance of strengthening relationships across the Pacific region through collaborative and culturally grounded research partnerships.
Dr Patricia Rodie stated,“we are honoured to host this gathering as we continue to strengthen relationships between our institutions and our peoples across the Pacific region. This collaboration recognises the significance of storytelling, Indigenous knowledge systems, cultural identity, and the importance of truth-telling and reconciliation in building stronger and more inclusive communities.”
The proposed collaboration, titled “Yarning and Tok Stori for Pacific Migration: Truth-Telling and Reconciliation for First Nations Communities across Australia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and New Caledonia,” aims to foster meaningful partnerships grounded in Indigenous methodologies and lived experiences.
Dr Patricia Rodie highlighted that the initiative presents exciting opportunities for SINU academics and students to engage in collaborative research, scholarship opportunities, and regional knowledge exchange.
The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss and refine the proposed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), identify areas of mutual interest, and explore practical ways both institutions can work together to advance research, teaching, learning, and community engagement across the region.
SINU remains committed to valuing Indigenous voices, preserving cultural heritage, and generating knowledge that contributes to the wellbeing and development of Pacific communities.
