SINU successfully held internal strategic plan workshop

Press Release
1st December 2025

The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) is a step closer to launching its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, following a successful internal strategic plan workshop held on Thursday 27 November 2025.

The 2026–2030 Strategic Plan is expected to go through its final two processes β€” validation and Council approval β€” before its official launch in March 2026.

Speaking to SINU Senior Management members who attended the workshop at the Outback Hotel in Honiara, SINU Acting Vice Chancellor and Pro Vice Chancellor Academic (PVCA), Associate Professor Eric Katovai, highlighted the importance of the strategic plan in his opening remarks.

β€œA strategic plan is not simply a document for compliance or accreditation. It is the backbone of institutional identity and aspiration.

β€œIt articulates who we are as a National University, what we stand for, and what we commit ourselves to achieve. It becomes the compass that guides our decisions, behaviour, investments, partnerships, and ultimately, our impact on the nation we serve.

β€œIn the next five years, SINU will continue to operate in a rapidly changing environment β€” shaped by demographic shifts, climate vulnerability, technological disruption, workforce demands, and a regional landscape that is becoming increasingly interconnected.

β€œA strong strategic plan ensures that we are not merely responding to change but leading the conversations that shape change.”

The Acting Vice Chancellor said that as the premier institution of higher learning in the Solomon Islands, SINU’s strategies must be bold, innovative, and grounded in reality. He added that the plan must reflect strategies that are not abstract or merely aspirational, but actionable, measurable, and impactful.

He also emphasised the importance of critical review as a crucial step in fine-tuning the strategic plan.

β€œThis is the moment where we must critically review the draft, interrogate its assumptions, strengthen its clarity, and ensure that priorities are grounded in evidence and aligned to our resources.

β€œA strategic plan is only as strong as the honesty of the conversations behind it. What we agree to today will shape decisions made by the University Council, the Senior Management Team, and leadership across all Faculties and Departments.

β€œThis plan will shape our institutional choices β€” where we invest, what we strengthen, what we refine or pause, and how we exercise leadership across the University.

β€œFinally, I urge all of us to consider the long-term implications of this plan. The decisions we make today will influence not only the next five years, but the next decade and beyond.

β€œI hope that when we look back after 2036, we can say with conviction that:
Β· this strategic plan guided SINU to new heights,
Β· it shaped a stronger and more resilient University,
Β· and it enabled achievements that could be measured β€” not only described. That is the legacy we aim for.”

In his closing remarks, the Acting Vice Chancellor thanked participants for their contributions, and acknowledged the Pro Vice Chancellor Corporate (PVCC) office and the Institutional Planning & Development (IPD) team for leading the way in formulating the new strategic plan.

β€œAs we move into the next phase of refinement, I encourage all of us to maintain this spirit of collaboration and critical thinking.

β€œLet us continue to ask the right questions, challenge assumptions, and remain focused on the bigger picture β€” a resilient, innovative, and future-ready SINU.

β€œThank you once again for your time, your commitment, and your passion for this University. I look forward to working with all of you as we finalise a plan we can proudly say will guide SINU to new heights.”
