The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (MCT) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a new Solomon Islands National Culture Centre at SINU.

The MOU was signed this morning at the SINU Kukum campus by SINU Pro Vice-Chancellor Corporate, Dr. William Parairato, and Minister of Culture and Tourism, Hon. Choylin Yim-Douglas.

The agreement outlines the collaboration between SINU and MCT to redevelop the former FOPA village into the β€œSINU Village”, which will represent the cultural heritage of all nine provinces.

Key objectives of the MOU include:

  1. Establishing a shared understanding and commitment to rehabilitate and develop the SINU Village.
  2. Promoting the cultural diversity of the Solomon Islands and generating revenue for the University through tourism, events, and other cultural activities.
  3. Positioning SINU Village as a recognized national destination for tourism and the arts.
  4. Assigning SINU responsibility for the operation and management of the Village.
  5. Securing government grants to support the development and maintenance of the Village, with amounts determined collaboratively.
  6. Encouraging institutional-level collaboration in arts and culture, including the establishment of an Institute for Arts and Culture, and joint initiatives in research, innovation, and cultural product development.

Speaking at the signing, Minister Choylin Yim-Douglas said her Ministry is pleased to partner with SINU and is committed to developing the site over the next five years.

In response, Dr. Parairato expressed gratitude for the Ministry’s trust, affirming that SINU is ready to host the new development and looks forward to implementing the MOU.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by MCT Permanent Secretary Bunyan Sivoro, Director of Culture Dennis Marita, SINU Director Institutional Planning & Development Darius Ramo, Acting SINU Properties, Facilities & Projectors Director David Maekiki, and SINU Executive International Relations Officer Andrew Awa.
