In a heartfelt act of gratitude, third-year Nursing students from the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) this morning handed over a water tank to the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Sciences, a meaningful gift symbolizing appreciation for their years of study and growth at the University.

The initiative, entirely student-led, was made possible through funds raised by the class. The donation highlights the studentsโ€™ commitment to teamwork, community service, and giving back to the institution that has shaped their journey into future healthcare professionals.

Dean of the Faculty, Dr. Harrington, commended the students for their generosity and initiative.

โ€œI am very happy this morning to witness what the students did with the handing over of this water tank,โ€ he said. โ€œOur Class Tutor Committees allow each class to choose their leaders, and through their student committees, they are able to raise issues and ideas to the staff and higher levels for discussion. This is also part of their training. When there is no water, students often have to go home, meaning classes cannot continue. Through this experience, they see firsthand the needs within their learning environment.โ€

Dr. Harrington also emphasized the practical value of the water tank for studentsโ€™ wellbeing.

โ€œWith the rising cases of kidney problems and the heat from the sun, having a water tank here helps our students stay hydrated and healthy.โ€

Class Tutor Mr. Leon Manehoua praised the cohortโ€™s dedication and teamwork.

โ€œItโ€™s their own initiative,โ€ he said. โ€œThey are good and hardworking students. I really appreciate them and their ability to work together.โ€

For the students, the donation represents more than just a gift, it is a legacy. Third-year Nursing student from Vanuatu, Lesley Bara, explained how the idea began:

โ€œIn 2024, we formed a committee to organize our end-of-year function and decided to raise funds to give a token of appreciation to the school. Water is a big need in our faculty, when we do not have water, sometimes we have to miss our classes.โ€

โ€œThis project is part of developing not only our theoretical knowledge but also our practical skills, learning how to respond to needs in our communities and surroundings. It is also part of the legacy we will leave behind when we graduate.โ€

The faculty expressed deep gratitude to the Year 3 Nursing students for their thoughtfulness and initiative, noting that the water tank will serve as a lasting reminder of their generosity and commitment to improving the learning environment for future cohorts.
