SINU and Industry Partners Forge Path for Future Forestry Leaders

Press Release

16 September 2025ย

ย The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) first-year Forestry Diploma students recently completed a successful field trip to Hatanga Hardwoods Division as part of the FOR506: Administration & Human Resources Management unit.

The field trip provided students with hands-on learning about Timber Yard Operations and Workplace Culture, offering insights that extend beyond the classroom.

According to Lecturer Peter Mahoa, the visit was made possible through the ongoing partnership between SINUโ€™s Department of Forestry and the Solomon Islands Timber Processors and Exporters Association (SITPEA).

โ€œDuring the trip, students learned about daily structure and routines, employment policies, team management and dynamics, and health and safety protocols,โ€ Mr. Mahoa explained. โ€œThis experience gives our students an authentic understanding of the professional forestry environment.โ€

As part of the partnership with SITPEA, four SINU Forestry students are now on work attachment with Hatanga Hardwoods Division, Top Timber Company Limited, Align Timber Milling, and SolPacific Timber.

Mr. Mahoa emphasized that this initiative demonstrates SINUโ€™s commitment to Authentic Learning, and extended gratitude to the SITPEA Secretariat and its members, particularly the management teams at Hatanga Hardwoods Division, Top Timber Company Limited, Align Timber Milling, and SolPacific Timber, for investing in the future of Solomon Islandsโ€™ forestry professionals.

The field trip was a resounding success and an eye-opener for SINUโ€™s first-year Forestry students.
