Solomon Islands National University (SINU) proudly made its mark at the 6th Pacific Islands Universities Regional Network (PIURN) Conference, hosted by the Papua New Guinea University of Technology in Lae. The conference was held under the theme, “Harnessing Technologies for the Safe and Sustainable Development of the Pacific.”

A remarkable delegation of 25 SINU academics attended and presented 20 research abstracts, the largest contingent among the 15 member institutions of PIURN. Representing five facultiesโ€”including the Faculty of Science and Technology, Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Sciences, Faculty of Business and Tourism Studies, Faculty of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, and the Office of Research and Postgraduate Studiesโ€”the SINU team covered diverse themes such as public health, climate change, digital innovation, natural resource management, governance, and community development. As one of the youngest universities in the network, SINUโ€™s strong presence speaks volumes of its growing commitment to research excellence and regional collaboration.

This milestone reflects strategic leadership from university management, particularly Vice Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau, whose vision has placed research at the heart of SINUโ€™s academic mission.

The delegation delivered presentations spanning a wide range of regional concerns, from public health and climate change to fisheries, forestry, applied sciences, and postgraduate development. Each session reflected a common purpose: to generate actionable, community-driven solutions to the challenges facing the Solomon Islands and the broader Pacific region.

Beyond the research sessions, SINUโ€™s engagement continued behind the scenes. Dr. Hugo Bugoro represented SINU at the PIURN Board Meeting, while Dr. Jerry Siota brought his expertise to a high-level panel discussion on COP 31 and climate change.

โ€œI am incredibly proud of each SINU academic who presented,โ€ said Dr. Bugoro, who led the universityโ€™s delegation. โ€œTheir work reflects both individual excellence and SINUโ€™s expanding research capability. Itโ€™s crucial that our partners, including government, see the strategic value and potential that SINU holds.โ€

SINUโ€™s standout participation at this yearโ€™s PIURN Conference marks a turning point in its journey, a confident step forward in elevating Solomon Islands research on the regional and international stage.
