The Solomon Islands Maritime College (SIMC) today commemorated the International Day of the Seafarers under the theme โ€œMy Harassment-Free Shipโ€ at its Ranadi Campus. The event focused on promoting a safe, respectful, and inclusive working environment for all seafarers, locally and globally.

Despite a light drizzle in the morning, the celebration gathered momentum with strong attendance from a wide array of guests including SINUโ€™s Acting Vice-Chancellor and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Corporate) Dr. William Parairato, government representatives, stakeholders, maritime authorities, and members of the public. The Guest of Honour was the Minister for Infrastructure Development, Hon. Ricky Fuoo.

In his opening address, Director of SIMC, Capt. Dr. Teorae Kabure, warmly welcomed guests and reaffirmed the Collegeโ€™s mission in shaping the future of the Solomon Islands’ maritime industry.

Delivering his remarks, Dr. William Parairato paid heartfelt tribute to seafarers and acknowledged their indispensable role in global trade and national development.

โ€œToday is a historic day for all our seafarers, in Solomon Islands and around the globe. The theme ‘My Harassment-Free Ship’ is a bold initiative that demands a shift in maritime culture, to create a workplace where every seafarer feels safe, valued and protected,โ€ said Dr. Parairato.

He stressed that seafarers, despite being away from families for long periods, are the invisible force keeping global economies afloat, ensuring safe passage for passengers and vital goods.

Dr. Parairato reaffirmed SINUโ€™s ongoing commitment to advancing maritime education through SIMC, noting key infrastructure projects including the successful launch of the SOLAS Centre in April and the upcoming lifeboat installation project valued between $5โ€“6 million SBD.

โ€œWith continued collaboration and support from stakeholders like the Solomon Islands Government, SIMA, SIPA, and our donor partners, we aim to rebuild SIMC into one of the regionโ€™s finest maritime institutions,โ€ he added.

A special tribute item titled โ€œGirls at Seaโ€ was presented during the event, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony in remembrance of departed and fallen seafarers, honouring their dedication and sacrifice.

The celebration concluded with a guided tour of the SIMC campus, showcasing ongoing developments and the Collegeโ€™s potential as a regional hub for maritime training.

The International Day of the Seafarers, celebrated annually on 25 June, is a global observance that recognizes the vital role of seafarers in ensuring maritime safety, sustaining global trade, and fostering marine sustainability.
