The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) successfully concluded its first micro-credential short course, Leadership for Security Practitioners, held from 23โ25 September 2025 at the G2 Lecture Theatre, Panatina Campus. The intensive three-day course was convened by Dr. Peter Connolly DSC CSC, SINU Adjunct Senior Fellow.
The course brought together 25 mid-level leaders from key Solomon Islands Government (SIG) agencies, including the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF), National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Solomon Islands Customs and Excise Division, Solomon Islands Government ICT Services (SIG ICT), Solomon Islands Ports Authority, the National Parliament of Solomon Islands, and Correctional Services Solomon Islands (CSSI).
This initiative, fully supported by the Australia Solomon Islands Support Facility (ASIPS), aims to enhance leadership skills, ethical decision-making, and interagency collaboration in the national security sector. Participants had the opportunity to engage in practical exercises, tok stori sessions, and discussions emphasizing customary leadership models and leadership styles such as servant leadership and directive control.
Dr. Connolly said,โthe course was designed to be highly contextualized for Solomon Islandsโ leaders, incorporating local case studies and fostering a collaborative environment. It is part of SINUโs ongoing commitment to building the capacity of mid-career practitioners in national security.โ
The course provides participants with the option to earn a micro-credential as a standalone certificate or as part of a credit-bearing pathway that can be stacked with other short courses toward a postgraduate qualification in SINUโs Security program.
Through this course, participants were able to:
โขโReview different leadership styles such as servant leadership and directive control, and their practical applications.
โขโUnderstand principles of ethical decision-making and team leadership.
โขโEnhance skills in interdisciplinary and whole-of-government environments.
This program follows extensive consultations with line ministries and guidance from the Vice-Chancellor Professor Transform Aqorau, reflecting SINUโs commitment to responsive, applied learning that addresses national priorities.
