A significant brainstorming session was held at the FAFF Conference Center on 25th July 2024, to discuss the strategic collaboration for advancing agricultural education at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU). The session saw the participation of SINU representatives including Prof. Transform Aqorau, Vice Chancellor of SINU, Dr. Samson Viulu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAL), Dr. Maclean Vaqalo of Prosperity Farm, and several other key stakeholders from the agricultural sector.
The session aimed to set the agenda for upcoming discussions on sustainable agriculture education at SINU. The context of the discussion was premised on the importance of agriculture education and the surrounding ecosystem that supports its benefits. The dialogue highlighted the pressing social indicators and the pivotal role SINU plays in partnering with the government to create an educated population capable of making informed choices, especially in light of the rising lifestyle and dietary-related health crises.
Key challenges discussed included resource limitations within SINU’s Agriculture and Environment Departments, the necessity for program reviews, and the need for stronger networking and partnerships with stakeholders, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture. The importance of integrating climate resilience crops and promoting self-reliance among farmers was emphasized.
Main Takeaways:
– Training: Emphasis on higher education, fit-for-purpose training, TVET, TAFE, change management, short courses, and micro-credentials.
– Research: Focus on smart agriculture, sustainable practices, climate resilience, and high crop yields.
– Scholarships: Initiatives to improve completion rates and encourage youth involvement in agriculture.
– Partnerships: Strengthening collaborations with MAL, FAO, and JCU to enhance agricultural education and practices.
The session concluded with a commitment to continue these collaborative efforts. The next brainstorming session is proposed to be held within the next couple of months, with an aim to involve more stakeholders, including representatives from Kastom Garden and other key partners. This inclusive approach will foster stronger partnerships and innovative solutions for advancing agricultural education at SINU.
