The Solomon Islands National University (SINU) is pleased to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kyoto University, a prestigious institution known for its academic excellence and home to eleven Nobel Laureates. The MoU was signed by Professor Transform Aqorau, Vice Chancellor of SINU, and Nagahiro Minato, President of Kyoto University, marking a significant milestone in the pursuit of academic collaboration and exchange between the two universities.

The primary objective of this MoU is to foster effective and mutually beneficial cooperation in education, research, and other scientific areas. The partnership aims to internationalize higher education through the development of collaborative research initiatives.

Under the terms of the MoU, SINU and Kyoto University will engage in a range of collaborative activities, including:
1. Exchange of scientific materials, publications, and information.
2. Exchange of faculty members and researchers.
3. Exchange of students.
4. Joint research projects and meetings for research purposes.
5. Development of joint graduate programs at the Master’s level.
6. Other academic and cultural exchanges of mutual interest and benefit.

The partnership will allow both universities to leverage their unique strengths and resources to advance research in critical areas such as human ecology, health sciences, tropical forestry, human impacts on the environment, and environmental impacts on communities.
Professor Transform Aqorau expressed his enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “I am very pleased about developing this partnership, which has been developed with the support of Professor Furosawa. I am hopeful that this collaboration will lead to significant advancements in our understanding of human ecology, health sciences, tropical forestry, and the interrelated impacts between human activities and the environment. By working closely with Kyoto University, we can contribute to solving some of the most pressing environmental and health challenges facing our communities.”

Kyoto University, renowned for its contributions to various fields of science and technology, boasts a rich history of academic excellence. The university has produced eleven Nobel Laureates, underscoring its commitment to research and innovation. This collaboration with SINU aligns with Kyoto University’s mission to foster global academic partnerships and contribute to the advancement of knowledge and societal development.

The signing ceremony, conducted virtually, was witnessed by Dr. Eric Katovai, Acting Pro Vice Chancellor Academic, and Dr. Humpress Harrington, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine and Health Sciences. This momentous occasion marks the beginning of a fruitful collaboration between the two institutions.
The MoU, effective immediately, will remain in force for an initial period of five years and will be automatically renewed annually. The parties may establish supplementary agreements for specific cooperation projects to ensure the effective implementation of the MoU’s objectives.

Both institutions are confident that this partnership will lead to substantial academic and scientific achievements, enhancing the educational and research capabilities of both universities and contributing to the global academic community.
