Twenty-nine students from the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) received the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship for the second semester of 2024 today. The recipients include three students from the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishery; five from the Faculty of Business and Tourism Studies; five from the Faculty of Education and Humanities (FEH); five from the Faculty of Nursing, Medicine, and Health Science (FNMHS); six from Distance Flexible Learning (DFL); and five from the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST).
During the award presentation ceremony held today at the SINU Kukum Lecture Theatre, His Excellency Cai Weiming, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to the Solomon Islands, highlighted that the ceremony demonstrates the PRC’s commitment to honoring the educational cooperation between the two countries.
“Education cooperation is an important part of China-SI relations and has been constantly deepened over the past 5 years. Our two countries have signed and renewed the MOUs on educational cooperation, which laid a solid foundation for our cooperation in the fields of scholarships and student exchanges, inter-school cooperation, language education, and short-term training.”
“China has sponsored hundreds of government officials and professionals for training in China, and provided scholarships for more than 130 young students to further study in China.Those programs cover areas of finance, diplomacy, agriculture, health, information, communication and climate change, which help SI cultivate a large number of talents, and enhance SI ability to develop independently.”
“SINU is the focal point for our educational cooperation. The Ocean University of China has established a cooperative relationship with SINU. Both sides agreed on cooperation in short-term exchanges, joint Masters programs, and the launching of China-Solomon Islands Oceans Research Center at SINU.To meet the increasing need for Mandarin Chinese learning, the Chinese side is also working with SINU on language teaching cooperation. Last year, the Chinese Embassy launched the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship at SINU, which was warmly welcomed by SINU teachers and students.At the repeated requests of SINU, the Chinese Embassy has decided to offer this scholarship again.”
“As long as it is supported by the SINU teachers and students, as long as it promotes friendship and cooperation between China and Solomon Islands, we will continue to enhance our cooperation with SINU.”

Speaking on behalf of SINU on the occasion, SINU Pro Vice-Chancellor Academic (Acting) Dr. Eric Katovai thanked the People’s Republic of China for the support.“I am truly delighted and deeply grateful this morning to express my heartfelt thanks to the People’s Republic of China for their steadfast support and the generous provision of 29 partial scholarships to our students at the Solomon Islands National University (SINU).”
