Unit Title: Introduction to Biogeography

This unit introduce the student to the concept of biogeography, its interpretation and application; interaction between living organisms with climate and physical environment with special reference to Solomon Islands and other South Pacific Islands. Biogeography is a degree level unit which examines the biosphere from a geographic perspective. It considers the evolution of plant and animal communities and biomes. The biosphere includes all life forms that exist on earth. This is an integrative unit which examines concepts and knowledge from physical geography, geology, ecology and evolutionary biology. Topics include: the origin and dispersal of plants and animals; biotic communities; ecological relationships; and the impact of human activity on the biosphere.
