Mr. Carlos Hiro
Head of Department

Master of Forestry Science from the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand, Post-Graduate Diploma in Forestry from the University of Canterbury (UC), Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the University of Technology (UNITECH) , Papua New Guinea.

Carlos Hiro joined SINU in 2015 after working for Soils, Plants & Environment Consulting (SPE) on Mine-Site Rehabilitation, World Vision Economic Development Project and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community Land Resource Division. His research interest are on restoration of degraded tropical forest, forest biodiversity and tropical silviculture

Ms. Claire Oiire
Lecturer

Master’s Degree in Environmental Studies (Nagoya University), Bachelor Degree in Environmental Science (University of the South Pacific).

Prior to joining SINU in January 2019, I studied at Nagoya University in Japan.  I was part of Ecology laboratory and involved in several researches that was carried out during my 2 years of study. My research interest is mainly in the field of ecology and conservation.  My passion is to advocate for rural sustainable development, sanitation and Women empowerment in rural communities.

Mr. Samuel Pitakaka Vazu

Master of Forest Science, a Post Graduate Diploma in Forest Science & A Bachelors in Forest Science

Prior to joing SINU I with the Ministry of Forestry and Research as Chief Forester (Licensing) . Have also previously serve at the former SICHE at the National Forestry Training Institute (NFTI), Poitete, Kolobanagara, Western Province

Rejoin SINU in June 2021 as Lecturer in Wood Science and Forest Utilization in the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry & Fisheries and with the Forestry Department.

Dr. David Lopez Cornelio

Dr. David Lopez Cornelio is a Peruvian forester that has been lecturing in Melanesia for more than a decade. His interests are on land use and land cover change detection, forest mensuration and wildlife management.

Mr. Larren Gomese

Post Graduate Diploma in Forestry from the University of Canterbury (UC), New Zealand. BSc Degree in Forestry from the PNG University of Technology (UNITECH) in Papua New Guinea.

Prior to joining the Faculty of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (FAFF), he worked with the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), coordinating Agroforestry Projects in 5 different provinces in Solomon Islands. His interests are mainly in the field of Forest Ecology and Agroforestry.

Mr. Henry Kaomara

Bachelor of Science In Forest Management, Advanced Diploma Agriculture Education, Certificate In Tropical Forestry)

Henry Kaomara has extensive teaching and management experience in the area of forestry. He is currently a Forest Tutor in the Forestry Department at the Faculty of Agriculture Forestry Fisheries and environment Studies, Solomon island national university. He has also been teaching forestry students in diploma and Certificate programme, and held responsibilities posts, as programme coordinator and acting Head of Department for the Forestry Department. For more than 10 years, he was a Forest Senior Supervisor in the Kolombangara Forest Product Limited working in the areas of survey, research, reforestation, and harvesting and shipment section. Prior to that he was an Agriculture teacher in the High school. Currently, a tutor in Forest management & Silviculture, Forest Survey, Forest Ecology

Peter Mahoa

Prior to joining SICHE, Peter joined the Government reforestation program after graduating with a SICHE Certificate in Tropical Forestry. The reforestation program executed by the government through the Ministry of Forest has given him much needed experience in the field

He then later joined Eagon Group of Companies on Choiseul Island in 1994 to initiate their reforestation program after the government go into privatization of government plantations

In 2008, Peter Mahoa join SICHE, coordinating the Forestry Certificate Program till 2015

In 2012, he led a three-man team to Fiji National University (FNU) and University of Technology (Unitech), Lae, PNG scouting for Diploma Curriculum, now delivered here at SINU

At present he is responsible to coordinate student’s practicum and work base attachment with stakeholders
