Unit Title: Forest Roads Engineering

The first part of the course will enable the students to have a clear and definite understanding in forest engineering which covers the following instructional areas: design and supervise the construction of forest roads, small forest bridges, erosion control structures, forestry building structures and materials such as mixing of concrete and costing of buildings, setting out site, basic construction methods, roofs and drainage, basic water reticulation, pressure and flow, basic plumbing fittings, water supply systems for simple buildings, surveying instruments including chain, compass, dumpy level and related accessories and their uses in engineering work with regards to principles of road design, grades, horizontal and vertical alignment, designing curves by graphical method, calculating cuts and fills, bridge, drainage and culvert design, road maintenance and grading, measuring grades, pegging a center line and curves, designing horizontal alignment, use of air photo interpretation to plan and design road network in environmental sensitive areas, the context of timber harvesting and forest management with the scope of forestry engineering and mechanization in Solomon Islands; common sources of power for forestry and common power transmission systems; common metal work; designing metal work for forestry processing units including veneer machines, paper making machines, plywood board processing machines, and power tools, gas and electrical welding systems; pre-starting and preventative maintenance checks on internal combustion engine machines.
