Unit Title: Mathematics & Computing Skills

The unit introduces the students to basic mathematics and computing skills which covers the following instructional areas: basic statistics, the concept and background to commonly used forestry parameters such as conversion factors used to convert log volume from one system of measurements to another, the basic of diameter breast height, basal area, metric system conversion, mixing of chemicals and water per hectare quantities and per-hectare costs, trigonometric functions for tree height calculation and slope distance calculation, number of trees per plot calculation, scatter-grams and linear regression calculation and interpolate and extrapolate unknown values, population random sampling techniques, interpretation of sample data and confidence sample for population estimates.
