Unit Title: Introduction to Geographical Information Systems(GIS)
This unit equips students with the knowledge and skills to better understand the concepts of GIS and its application in land use planning. Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of GIS and Remote Sensing (RS) using local data as part of their practicum. Students should be able to demonstrate through lab exercises how GIS operations can help visualize land use opportunities, limitations and planning scenario options. Students will be able to appreciate the use of geospatial technology in improving land use planning in the Solomon Islands, using a case study approach with a local community, and they got to be taught about the use of GPS.
